Nghi Son 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant has a designed capacity of 1,200 MW, with a total investment of nearly 2,793 million USD. The project started construction in 2018 and was one of the very few coal-fired power plants in Vietnam using supercritical technology (USC) with high efficiency, significantly reducing coal consumption, generating energy greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental problems. 

The project is invested in the form of build - operate - transfer and will be handed over to Vietnam Electricity after 25 years.

Although the construction of the factory continues in the complicated context of the COVID-19 epidemic, the price of raw materials increases, but with high determination and the companionship of ministries, branches and Thanh Hoa province, the project is completed on schedule as promised. 

Unit Generator 1 was officially put into operation on January 11, 2022 and was successfully connected to the North-South 500 KV transmission line, connecting to the national grid. It was expected that the whole plant would be commercially operated by July 2022, expected to provide electricity for production, business and more than 6 million households. 

Not only did the project complete on schedule but also always complied with international safety standards during construction. At the same time, Nghi Son 2 Power Company Limited and the investor paid special attention to implementing community activities, with 95 projects to improve infrastructure, ecology, and improve the health of local people. 

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, on behalf of the Provincial Party Committee and People's Committee of Thanh Hoa Province, Mr. Nguyen Van Thi, Standing Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee, emphasized: The inauguration of Unit 1 of Nghi Son 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant Project of Nghi Son Electric Co., Ltd. was a very important event, creating a new enthusiasm, new motivation and opening the way to success of a new year; also an event of series of practical activities to celebrate the Party and Happy Spring, welcame the 92nd anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s founding and looked forward to the 75th anniversary of Uncle Ho's first visit to Thanh Hoa (February 20, 1947 - February 20, 2022). 

Standing Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee said: “This is the second largest foreign investment project in Nghi Son Economic Zone, after the Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Complex project and is an important project, showing the good cooperation relationship between the Government of Vietnam, the Government of Japan and the Government of Korea”.

In the context of complicated developments of the COVID-19 epidemic, the completion of Unit Power 1 is a great effort and determination of the investor during the construction process.

Unit Generator 1 comes into operation, not only providing about 3.9 billion kWh of electricity per year, contributing to ensuring national energy security, meeting the demand for electricity for industry and daily life, but also solving electricity jobs’ problems for labor, making great contributions to the socio-economic development of Thanh Hoa province, creating a strong spillover in attracting investment and contributing to accelerating the process of industrialization and modernization of Thanh Hoa province as well as the North Central region and the whole country.

The Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee highly appreciated the cooperation of investors who chose Thanh Hoa province to invest in this important project. At the same time, praising branches and levels of the province, local people and especially officers and workers of Nghi Son 2 Electric Co., Ltd., staff, engineers and workers of construction units Installation had made great efforts, overcame difficulties, and put Unit 1 into operation.

In order to inaugurate Unit Generator 2 and put the whole project into commercial operation, he suggested all branches and levels, especially the Management Board of Nghi Son Economic Zone and Industrial Parks, Town The Party Committee, People's Committee of Nghi Son town, Party committees, authorities, mass organizations and people of communes and wards in the project area continued to accompany and coordinate well with investors and contractors to solve or propose solutions difficulties and obstacles in the process of project implementation with the highest responsibility; ensured good security - order, social safety, created all conditions for the investor to implement the project in the most favorable way. 

He suggested Nghi Son 2 Electric Co., Ltd. to closely coordinate with the general contractor, to mobilize maximum financial resources, human resources, equipment and machinery to continue the construction of Unit 2; also ensure the committed progress, absolute labor safety, environmental sanitation, do not let the construction process affect the life, production and activities of the people in the project area; at the same time, adapt safely, flexibly, and effectively control the COVID-19 epidemic during the construction process.
